Ghost Hunting Theory and Techniques

Title: Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal

Author: Loyd Auerbach

Date: 2004

Publisher: Ronin Publishing

This 2004 "How To" guide by Loyd Auerbach is really a tremendous book. The first 50 or so pages are dedicated to describing apparitions, hauntings, and poltergeists. This section is greatly expanded in his book "Hauntings and Poltergeists," but this gives the would-be investigator a framework to use.

He then details his step-by-step process for evaluating cases and interviewing witnesses. The doesn't necessarily deemphasize using technology, but rather puts its use into perspective. He then wraps the book up by describing how to potentially resolve cases of poltergeists, apparitions, and hauntings.

Title: Hauntings and Poltergeists: A Ghost Hunter's Guide

Author: Loyd Auerbach

Date: 2004

This is really a tremendous book, and my only regret is that I didn't read it months ago. This book is entirely theory, specifically Psi Theory. Explaining Psi Theory is impossible in a few sentences, so all I can say is read this book. It's not a "how-to" book on ghost hunting. Read Ghost Hunter's Guidebook by Troy Taylor or one of the many others for that.

Title: How to Hunt Ghosts

Author: Joshua Warren

Date: 2003

This book is an excellent starting point for all those interested in ghosthunting and the paranormal. The author does a great job explaining current scientific theory on what ghosts are and how they manifest themselves. You find yourself frequently saying, "That makes a lot of sense and really seems possible."

The basics are all here in this book, and is a great addition to the library of an interested ghosthunter. It's not the final word on ghost, and he may try to squeeze too much in the book at times, but there are other books out there to expand your knowledge base. Good luck and let us know your take after you read it.

Title: Ghost Hunter's Guidebook: The Essential Guide to Investigating Ghosts and Hauntings.

Author: Troy Taylor

Date: 2007 (10th Anniversary Edition)

In my opinion, this is an absolute must-read for anyone considering participating in or conducting their own paranormal investigations. Troy Taylor is not only one of the foremost leaders and pioneers in paranormal research, but also a tremendous writer.

He goes to great lengths to explain photographing ghosts, getting EVPs, and using other essential technical equipment. However, he stresses the importance of thorough research on a location, and the need to do detailed interviews of witnesses. This includes taking a skeptical approach along the way.

Title: Strange Frequencies: A Practical Guide to Paranormal Technology

Author: Craig Telesha

Publisher: Whitechapel Press

Date: 2008

Craig Telesha, currently the technical director for the Spirit Society of Pennsylvania and founder of www.ghost-tech.com, published this book just this year. It's 136 pages long, but, in my opinion, should have been longer. He does a nice job discussing photography specifically. How to set up your digital camera for still pics, and goes in depth in debunking orbs. He has chapters on matrixing, video, and EVPs. There is also a chapter discussing EMFs, but this was particularly one that I felt could have been more in depth. He also devotes a good 20 pages to other forms of Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC), and even goes through a step-by-step on how to build a ghost box. There is also info in the back on how to build an EMF detector and negative ion detector.

Title: Ghost Science: The Essential Guide to the Scientific Study of Ghosts and Hauntings.

Publisher: Whitechapel productions

Author: Vince Wilson

Date: 2006

This is a follow-up to Mr. Wilson's book "Ghost Tech." In this new book, he reviews his theories as to why ghosts exist, why they exist in certain locations, and why ghost hunters use the tools they do to investigate the paranormal.

He discusses EMF's and EMF meters, cold spots and thermometers, and EVPs and their existence in detail. Vince also devotes a few chapters to the concept of higher dimensions, parapsychology, and the use of sensitives on an investigative team.

All in all it was a pretty good book. There are a lot of consistent themes that he presents, that run through other books on ghosts and ghost hunting, but, as always, you can pick up a few new tidbits here and there. Some of his theories are interesting, especially the concept of electromagnetic resonance and memory possession.

Fun and interesting books on the paranormal and ghost hunting

Title: A Paranormal Casebook: Ghost Hunting in the New Millennium

Author: Loyd Auerbach

Date: 2005

This 2005 book by Loyd Auerbach details 18 of his favorite cases spanning from the early 1980s to 2005. He goes into great detail in describing cases that he felt were truly paranormal, and those that he was able to find natural explanations for the unexplained activity.

He spends many pages describing to cases in particular -- The Moss Beach Distillery (The Blue Lady) and The USS Hornet. These all were fascinating cases, but these two were truly incredible, and he really makes you wish you could have been there.

This was not only an entertaining book, but was helpful to get some sense of how he investigates as well.

I highly recommend picking this up, and I really hope he writes another book like this one in the future.

Title: Entangled Minds: Extrasensory Experiences in Quantum Reality

Author: Dean Radin

Date: 2006

"Erwin Schrodinger, one of the founders of quantum theory, used the word entanglement to refer to connections between separated particles that persisted regardless of distance. These connections are instantaneous, operating "outside" the usual flow of time" -- Dean Radin

This epic book by Dean Radin, author of "The Conscious Universe," is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in Psi theory. The first third of the book talks about who believes in Psi, and who seems to be more able to channel their Psi. Describing the origins and history of the Psi theory.

The middle portion of the book is very dense, but explains in detail the laboratory evidence for the existence of Psi in everyone. You can get bogged down through the middle, but it is so worth reading.

The last portion of the book describes how quantum physics can explain Psi through the process of entanglement.
