Types of Hauntings By: Dr. Nick Spantgos and Dr. Derrick Ward The primary job of a paranormal investigation team, is determining whether a home or business is haunted. That is why people seek out credible teams like Paranormal Research Investigators (PRI). However, what most of the general public fail to realize, is that there are different types of hauntings, and one or more of these types could be occurring at one location. Unfortunately, some lesser investigative teams also fail to educate their clients on these matters. One of PRI’s missions is to educate their clients as much as possible, which, in turn, makes them feel more comfortable living and working at a suspected haunted location. In addition, PRI dedicates a great deal of time and resources into researching new and unique investigative techniques and tools, as well as trying to uncover and better understand the basis for various types of hauntings. The currently accepted types of hauntings include – residual, intelligent, poltergeist, and demonic. We will outline these types in detail, but bear in mind that these are just theories. No one has all the definitive and absolute answers…not yet anyway. Residual Haunting A residual haunting can come in all shapes, sizes, and forms. These paranormal events can range from footsteps on a staircase, to a child crying, a ghostly apparition walking down a hallway, or even a ghost ship sailing across the ocean. These residual haunting events are thought to be a recurring playback of a past event, much like the menu of a DVD that loops from beginning to end over and over, or a broken record that repeats itself. It is currently thought that some form of energy is imprinted on the environment or an object, and it’s that residual energy that then manifests itself as the observed paranormal activity. When you try to communicate with the ghost, in this situation, it will not interact with you. It would be like talking to the actors on your television set, and expecting a response in return. Some researchers and investigators believe that highly emotionally charged events (murders, suicides, etc.) make it more likely that an imprint like this will occur and subsequently manifest itself. There is some good anecdotal evidence to support this, but there are also certainly many residual hauntings that are not preceded by this type of emotional event. No one knows how or why this energy becomes imprinted on the environment, but it is reported as the most common type of haunting that the general population encounters. It is very important for the investigative team to reinforce, and the clients to understand, that a residual haunting is not dangerous in any way. It is no more dangerous, and should be no scarier, than a ghost on a TV show or one you might see in a movie. An intelligent haunting, also known as a “Classic haunting,” involves a ghost or spirit that is interactive with the living in some way, and is much rarer than a residual type haunting. To understand what an intelligent haunting or ghost is, some brief background on what paranormal investigators and researchers actually believe ghosts are, would likely be helpful. The generally accepted theory among paranormal investigators is that the existence of interactive ghosts requires the personality or consciousness of a living person to survive bodily death. The physical composition or form of matter that the person’s personality or consciousness assumes is currently not known, and may never be known. However, it’s very important to also understand that scientists do not know what comprises the conscious mind of a living person either. In general though, PRI believes that a deceased person’s personality or consciousness survives bodily death in some form of energy. It is this “energy” that can then manifest itself in various ways and interact with the living around it. There are many theories on how this interaction occurs, from telepathy, psychokinesis, and transfer of kinetic energy, to the actual physical manifestation of a ghost that can actually interact with its’ surroundings like a living person. The bottom line is that no one really knows how this occurs, but it is this intelligent interaction that makes this type of ghost unique. It is also generally accepted that this type of haunting occurs soon after the death of the individual, usually within days to months. As previously discussed, this interactive or intelligent ghost is actually the disembodied personality or consciousness of a once living person. Therefore, the varieties of personalities that one might encounter are really limitless. The ghost could be shy, playful, outgoing, compassionate, mischievous, angry, or, even, malevolent. Why the ghost does not pass on to the Spirit World or Heaven is unknown, but the number of theories are numerous. Some of the more common reasons could include - wanting to say a final goodbye to a loved one; staying to protect a beloved family member; not knowing they have died; staying to complete unfinished business; and even to avenge their own death. When a paranormal team, like PRI, investigates a location, these are the types of ghosts or spirits we are trying to specifically interact with and document. While capturing evidence of a residual haunting is important and interesting, it is the intelligent ghost that may be trying to interact with the person that lives or works at the location. These ghosts can be the most troublesome for clients, because the person never feels like they are alone in their own home. The experience can be like living with an unwelcome roommate or feeling like you are always being watched. We try to document this by asking questions during Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) sessions, engaging in call and response sessions, and by trying to capture video or photographic evidence of a ghost. Poltergeists The German word poltergeist literally translates to “noisy ghost.” However, after decades of research by paranormal investigators and parapsychologists, we’ve come to realize that poltergeists are not really ghosts at all. In fact, it is now generally accepted that poltergeist activity typically results from psychokinesis (PK), also known as telekinesis. Psychokinesis is essentially the ability of a living person’s mind to physically move objects and produce other physical manifestations in the local environment. In poltergeist cases, this is called recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis (RSPK). The person, from which the PK activity emanates from, is called the “agent.” This living agent is classically described as an emotional tormented female teenager, but there are plenty of well documented poltergeist cases, in which the agent is not a teenage girl. The poltergeist activity usually ceases once the agent is identified and counseled about the issues that are troubling them, and resulting in RSPK outbursts. Demonic Haunting
