Paranormal Activity and the Environment Around Us

By

Derrick Ward, MD

As you woke up this morning and walked through your home, you changed the environment around you.  It was subtle, but it happened.  Your body temperature changed the local air temperature surrounding you, the ebb and flow of the local air currents were disrupted by your body movements, and your presence likely affected the ambient electromagnetic fields (EMFs).  It didn’t stop there, as you navigated your daily activities, you changed the environment as you drove to work, walked through your office, or made dinner once you returned home.  We living do this every moment of every day.  Is it such a stretch to think that ghosts might affect the environment in the same way?

The word “environment” has been commercialized in the past decade, and has become primarily associated with energy conservation, reducing our carbon footprint, global warming, and generally “greening” the world around us.  However, our environment is much more than that.  It is the aggregate of everything that surrounds us, every second of every day.  Yes, it includes the vast oceans or the polar ice caps that are likely thousands of miles from you as you read this, but the environment is also the temperature of the air around your body and the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emanating from the various electronic devices in your home.  In this sense, the environment around us is infinitely dynamic.  It is ever changing as you move around your home and is mostly invisible to our eyes.  However, our other known senses are able to detect these changes to some degree.  Our skin can sense temperature or humidity changes, our nose can detect new or different odors, and some people can even sense high electromagnetic fields.  So, how does this relate to ghosts, a haunting, or other paranormal activities?

The simplest way to begin thinking about this concept is to understand that, whatever ghosts are, they are made of something.  Just like you and I, ghosts are likely made of some type or types of matter.  The type of matter, is up for much debate, and may never be known.  However, if we assume that they are made up of some type of matter, they likely affect the environment surrounding them.  They could and should affect the ambient temperatures, EMFs, humidity, ion counts, and various other environmental factors.  There are many plausible theories on this subject.  These theories are found on the internet, in books, on television, and pushed by various paranormal experts.  These include the thoughts that ghosts produce EMFs, feed on EMFs, draw energy from the air causing “cold spots,” are more active in low humidity conditions, and others too numerous to mention.

Let’s list a few of the most common questions or hypotheses being thrown out there by paranormal investigators and laypeople -- Could the actual temperature of a ghost be cold, therefore chilling the local air temperature as it moves through space?  Does a ghost draw energy from the surrounding air, thereby producing a “cold spot?”  Is it possible that a ghost could actually produce an EMF, or does a ghost need an EMF to manifest itself?  Does low humidity and subsequent increase in static electricity provide a ghost more available energy to manifest?  Does high humidity squash all activity for the opposite reason?  How does high or low barometric pressure affect paranormal activity?  These are all questions that PRI is trying to answer with the current and future research we are conducting.

We do tend to agree with some of these theories, but the how and why has been elusive to investigators and researchers thus far.  That’s where PRI is different than other paranormal groups out there.  We don’t just pose theories or questions; we work to develop research protocols and studies that can hopefully answer these questions.  PRI currently monitors and records the outdoor and indoor weather and atmospheric conditions during our investigations.  We use highly sophisticated and technical instruments, including weather stations, tri-axis EMF meters, thermocouplers, barometers, and hygrometers.  Over time, we will unquestionably be able to collect a vast amount of data.  If we are able to correlate this data with paranormal activity levels and experiences, we will hopefully be able to provide answers to some or all of the questions listed above.
